Basic Shot - Follow, Center, Draw

(1) Follow Shot

Hitting the Cue Ball above center makes it spin forward faster than it's rolling forward. This is called a Follow, and it's just like a cartoon cop car going after the robbers. The cue ball is still spinning forward and grabs the cloth, taking off after the Object Ball. Extreme Follow is a pretty weird sight. The most important things are the amount of spin that you apply to the cue ball and how hard you hit the cue ball. A lot of spin makes the cue ball go farther after the collision. The higher you hit the ball above center, the more spin you may apply. If you hit the cue ball higher and harder, it goes farther. But be careful, it might totally be out of control if you hit the ball too high.

(2) Center Shot

Hitting the cue ball exactly in the center is the way to make a Center Shot. A center shot applies no spin because the cue ball transfers the power completely to the object ball with no angle. When a Center Shot is done properly, the cue ball will stop where it hits the object ball. Hitting the cue ball to the right or left of center can very easily cause you to miss the shot even though you aimed correctly. The center shot is a reference point for all other hits.

(3) Draw

Hitting the cue ball below dead center makes it spin backward as it goes forward and return to you after striking the object ball. This is called a Draw. A draw shot will dazzle you at first because the shot gives you a strong feeling of control. The reason to hit the cue ball low is the same as hitting it high. It can make the ball stop at a place where you will be able to make another shot. Sometimes, follow spin won't get you there, so draw is the next option that you should consider. The mechanics of a draw shot are basically the same as those of a follow shot. The only real difference is that you lower your bridge instead of raising it.

You can produce a variety of specific ball behaviors when you strike the cue ball anywhere along the vertical axis, but it does not drive the cue ball off the straight path to the object ball. Try hitting above and below the center of the ball, to see what happens.
